It took seven runner-up finishes, 94 tournament starts and four years of competing full-time on the PGA Tour. But somehow, the manner in which Cameron Young finally captured his first PGA Tour victory on Sunday felt strangely fitting. At the Wyndham Championship, the final event of the PGA Tour’s regular season, Young beat his nearest competitor by six shots.
Young, a force on tour from the moment he emerged in the pro game, separated himself from the field in Greensboro, N.C., creating room for a few late mistakes. Before this week, Young’s second-place finish count of seven was the most by any player on tour without a win since 1983.
The 2022 Rookie of the Year and runner-up at the 150th Open at St. Andrews, Young will no longer be identified as the ballstriker who had all the chops but no wins to show for it. The 28-year-old rose from No. 40 to No. 16 in the FedEx Cup with his maiden PGA Tour title at Sedgefield Country Club, down the road from his alma mater, Wake Forest.
“I’ve been waiting for it for a while,” Young said to CBS. “I never really thought I’d be that emotional about it, but it’s the end of my fourth season, and I’ve had my chances, never quite like this. I wasn’t going to let it get away from me today.”
