The Kerala High Court has sought the stance of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) on the ropeway project at Sabarimala.

In a suo motu action taken on the basis of the findings submitted by an advocate commission, a Bench of Justice V. Raja Vijayaraghavan and Justice K.V. Jayakumar sought details such as the feasibility of constructing the ropeway that would pass through the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

The proposal had given rise to several environmental concerns. The court orally raised concerns about the project’s practicality and necessity and added that there was no clarity on the route and the environmental impact.

While no trees were cut for a cable car system in Palani, the court said the case of Sabarimala was different.
