LBW appeal Nair offers no shot to a huge nipbacker from Atkinson that would actually have missed leg stump. England rightly decided against a review. I suspect Nair left it on height, legitimately so, but it jars to see a batsman pad up to a ball that is missing leg stump rather than off.
Atkinson starts with a maiden, his eighth of the innings. In the circumstances he has bowled remarkably well.
Josh Tongue’s first ball of the day goes to the boundary - but it could easily have brought a wicket. Karun Nair drove loosely and snicked wide of second slip at catchable height.
That’s the start of a liquorice allsorts over from Tongue: a full toss taht Nair doesn’t push, a good inswinger that leads to an unsuccessful LBW appeal against Washington and a poor delivery that Washington puts away to fine leg.
