My husband Jeremy took this picture in June 2021 in a campsite on the west coast of northern Spain. It’s of me and my oldest son Bo, and our dog Astrid. We had spent 10 months in Portugal after the first outbreak of Covid-19 living a very simple life, with all our belongings in storage. We took this on our drive leaving Portugal. Everything that wasn’t in storage was in the van, and it was such an amazing feeling of freedom to have my family and our few belongings right there with me – not sure what the future would hold but with everything we needed within arm’s reach. Looking at it makes me nostalgic in the best way, and makes me want to hit the road again.

This captures some of the energy and optimism of my first holiday with a recently formed friendship group that united around the mantra, “Who can be the most outrageous?” It shows us in the midst of the Pride Parade in Stockholm. My friend Luke had said that anyone can join the parade, which wasn’t true, but we proceeded to enjoy the applause from the locals. I guess some people see a road, others a catwalk. Leigh Bowery!, curated by Fiontán Moran, is at Tate Modern until 31 August
