A man who ran away from police died after being electrocuted and hit by a Tube train sent to look for him.

Robert English, 32, had been walking down a section of track in the dark between Hendon Central Station and Burnt Oak when the power to the line was switched back on and he was electrocuted.

He was last seen at 1am on May 19, when police mistakenly believed he had climbed over a fence that separated the railway lines from a park.

Believing the police had left and the man was no longer on the tracks, a railway worker then asked for the power to be turned back on, killing Mr English.

Senior coroner Andrew Walker said the train was not adequately equipped to conduct a search in darkness.
