With the last date for filing nominations for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Standing Committee elections set for August 29, tension is running high among corporators of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Jana Sena Party (JSP). Having missed out on key roles in the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections, the BJP has also stepped in, urging its high command to secure at least one seat on the committee.
After detailed discussions, TDP corporators led by Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao and JSP corporators headed by South MLA Ch. Vamsikrishna Srinivas compiled a list of aspirants, which was presented to local MLAs. An in-camera meeting with the MLAs and senior corporators was reportedly held at a private hotel on Monday to finalise the candidates. Following the meeting, it was reportedly finalised that out of the 10 available seats, six would be allotted to the TDP, three to the JSP, and for the first time, one seat will be offered to the BJP.
As this is the last standing committee election of the current five-year term, several TDP and JSP members are eyeing for the positions. Former YSRCP corporators who switched to the TDP and JSP after the elections last year have also expressed interest in contesting.
