Giving someone 'the finger' is not sex harassment, a tribunal has ruled - as long as you do it to both male and female colleagues.

Telecoms giant BT was sued after one of its business advisers made the rude gesture to a co-worker.

Andreea [corr] Cracuin claimed that the action - also known as 'flipping the bird' or 'flipping someone off' - was a breach of equality laws.

But the tribunal found that as Darren Sliman used it to fellow staff of both genders he wasn't being discriminatory.

The hand gesture - which was used by the Greeks and Romans thousands of years ago - is meant to represent male genitals and has been described as 'one of the most ancient insult gestures known' by anthropologist Desmond Morris.
