The opposition-organised rally targets Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over unfulfilled promises and alleged authoritarian tendencies
Protesters were seen gathering near the Sogo shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur and surrounding areas on Saturday afternoon, while others headed towards Merdeka Square.
The police presence was noticeable, with dozens of uniformed officers patrolling the area. More than 2,000 police officers and personnel have been stationed at key gathering points since at least 11am.
The rally was expected to draw 15,000 participants, with plans to march to Merdeka Square at 2pm. Organisers earlier said they expected a turnout of over 100,000 people.
Authorities have said they will not block the rally, with Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirming that police would facilitate the protest following a Federal Court ruling on July 1. Roads will stay open, with traffic near the city centre likely to be diverted.
