CNN host Abby Phillip asked senior political commentator Scott Jennings directly Wednesday why President Donald Trump doesn’t “just own up to” being named in the sought-after Justice Department files on late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“He attacked his own base for caring about this,” Phillip told her “NewsNight” panel. “He called them stupid and weak. He said he didn’t want their support. And it all seems that that is because he knew something was in there that was incriminating to him.”

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi told Trump in May that he was prominently named in the files, which she had vowed in February to release before the administration reversed course on its promised transparency.

“At the end of the day, I mean, if he’s in the files, just like a lot of the other people who might be in there because they associated with Epstein at one point, just own up to it,” argued Phillip. “Why doesn’t he just do that?”

Jennings, a pro-Trump conservative, asked, “Own up to what?”
