Road accidents rose significantly in Italy last year, especially on motorways, where there was a 6.9% increase in the number of crashes and a 7.1% increase in fatalities with respect to 2023, Istat said on Thursday.

The national statistics agency said road accidents as a whole were up 4.1%.

Italy recorded 173,364 road accidents involving injuries in 2024, Istat said, with 3,030 fatalities and 233,853 injuries "The most frequent incorrect driving behaviours continued to be distraction, failure to give way, and excessive speed," Istat said.

"Together, these accounted for 37.8% of all causes (85,339 cases), a figure that has remained stable over time.

"Excessive speed is the most punished driving infraction after illegal parking, representing 34% of all traffic violations.
