Last week saw a one-two punch to Israel's government. First, the Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party bolted from the coalition and from the government. Then, later in the week, in a smooth sequence that looked well-rehearsed, the Mizrahi ultra-Orthodox party Shas announced its exit. The coalition lost its 67-seat majority (out of 120 Knesset seats) and tumbled to a much slimmer minority government, with only 49 Knesset seats still held by parties officially in the coalition.
