Thailand bombed Cambodia with F-16 fighter jets on Thursday as relations between the two countries imploded.
According to Thai officials, at least eleven civilians were killed and several more injured in attacks including on a hospital. 40,000 civilians were evacuated from 86 villages close to the border.
Tensions between the south-east Asian neighbours over the disputed border were mounting for months, but the bitter spat escalated dramatically when border clashes were reported in six locations in an area known as the Emerald Triangle – where the two countries meet Laos.
Both sides claimed that the other started the ongoing fighting, which began early in the morning near the ancient Prasat Ta Moan Thom, some 250 miles north-east of Bangkok.
By midday, Thailand dispatched F-16 jets to strike a pair of military targets in Cambodia.
