eaven on earth: it’s hard to come by. Thankfully, there exists a near-enough substitute that is much easier to find. All you have to do is drive 20 minutes north from Dundee until you find yourself among rumbling bovine residents at Balkello farm.
I refer not to the rapture of cattle husbandry but the four modern lodges and traditional stone cottages that comprise The Hideaway Experience. Off-limits to children and decked out with just about every legal item you could ever require to relax — not least a hot tub, sauna and cavernous standalone white bath — the one-bedroom hideaways are spread about the 650-acre farm such that you need never encounter another human, should that be your wish, although the same may not be true of the cows.
The adults-only Hideaway Experience came to my attention this year as national finalists in the luxury experience category of VisitScotland’s Thistle Awards. As a keen sauna hobbyist who fantasises about ways to get paid to sit in hot tubs, the lodges immediately struck a chord.
