After a prolonged stalemate, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday (June 27, 2025) signalled the resumption of its internal election process, with notifications issued for the conduct of State unit elections in Tripura and Andhra Pradesh, and the appointment of senior leaders to oversee organisational elections in Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.

A notification issued by Rajya Sabha MP and BJP internal election in-charge K. Laxman confirmed that former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has been appointed as the poll in-charge for West Bengal. Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Harsh Malhotra have been entrusted with similar responsibilities for Maharashtra and Uttarakhand, respectively.

The notification further stated that elections to appoint a new president for the Tripura unit of the BJP are to be completed by June 29. Party sources added that a new State president for Andhra Pradesh is likely to be announced by July 1, although no formal notification of a poll schedule has been released for the State so far.

How does BJP elect its party president?

The internal election process is being closely watched, given that BJP national president J.P. Nadda has been serving on an extended term since his tenure formally concluded in early 2024, just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
