Ministers have been accused of seeking 'gimmicks' to solve the small boats crisis amid claims they want to do a 'one in, one out' deal with France.
No10 refused to comment on reports that an agreement could be reached within days to drastically alter the way the Channel migrant influx can be dealt with.
This year so far, more than 18,000 migrants have arrived via the Channel, in a record for this point in the year since data collection began in 2018.
Such a deal was mooted earlier this year with Transport minister Lilian Greenwood confirming in April there were 'discussions ongoing with the French government'.
It could see the UK accepting migrants seeking to reunite with their families, while sending others to France.
