In April 2025, a political storm erupted in Iran following remarks by Ali Larijani, a prominent reformist leader who formerly served as speaker of Iran's parliament and now acts as a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a televised interview, Larijani stated that if Iran were attacked and public demand for nuclear weapons increased, it would be possible to amend Khamenei's fatwa (religious ruling) that currently forbids the production of nuclear weapons.
