A man on his honeymoon in Florida was struck by lightning and killed Saturday, authorities told several outlets.

Jake Rosencranz, a 29-year-old from Colorado, was standing ankle-deep in water at New Smyrna Beach when lightning struck before 12:30 p.m., according to The New York Times. The storm was still several miles away, so lifeguards had not yet cleared the beach, according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Emergency personnel tried to save Rosencranz by giving him CPR, but he was unresponsive when he was transported to a hospital and later died from his injuries. This marked Florida’s first lightning strike death of the season. Karla Orozco, Volusia County Medical Examiner Office’s operations manager, told HuffPost that Rosencranz’s case isn’t public record yet, but confirmed that the lightning strike victim was 29 years old and died Saturday.

Mike Chitwood, sheriff of Volusia County, Florida, expressed his condolences on Facebook.

“So sorry for the tragic loss of a young man here on a delayed honeymoon with his wife,” he wrote. “At 29 years old, he should have had many more anniversaries with her for years to come. Sending sincere condolences to this young woman on behalf of all of us in Volusia County who were hoping against hope that the diligent efforts of our lifeguards, EMS team and ER staff would bring him back to her.”
