Zohran Mamdani declares victory in NYC’s Democratic mayoral primary as Andrew Cuomo concedes
New York City Democrats chose 33-year-old Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani as their mayoral candidate in Tuesday’s elections, stunning his opponent, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.
Though the race’s ultimate outcome would still be decided by a ranked choice count, Mamdani, who was virtually unknown outside political circles a year ago, was in a commanding position.
In a speech to supporters, Mamdani said: “Tonight, we made history”.
“In the words of Nelson Mandela, it always seems impossible until it is done,” he said. “My friends, we have done it.”
