The boss of the Metropolitan Police has apologised to veteran broadcaster Selina Scott after she was told officers could not meet her after she was viciously attacked and robbed because they did not have an available car.
Sir Mark Rowley admitted the force should have done better when he was quizzed by Nick Ferrari on his LBC show this morning.
A 74-year-old broadcaster revealed how she was targeted by a gang of thieves in broad daylight near Waterstones on Piccadilly.
The group surrounded her, struck her on the back of the leg, and snatched her purse in one of the busiest parts of central London.
With astonishing bravery given they were carrying what appeared to be a weapon, Ms Scott fought back and was able to keep hold of the bag – only for one of the practised thieves to deftly unzip it and remove her purse before running off.
