US President Donald Trump late Monday declared that Iran and Israel had agreed to a "Complete and Total" ceasefire in their conflict, after an earlier Iranian attack on a US base was widely interpreted as a calibrated response designed to avoid escalating the fighting further.
Iran's missile attack on a major US military base in Qatar on Monday was in retaliation for US strikes over the weekend on three Iranian nuclear sites.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that Iran would start the ceasefire, followed by Israel — and that the war would officially end after 24 hours. Iran and Israel did not immediately confirm this.
In the earlier attack, Iran aimed 14 short- and medium-range ballistic missiles at the Al-Udaid Air Base in Qatar, where recent satellite images showed the US had removed some aircraft in apparent anticipation of an attack. Trump said 13 missiles were intercepted and one was "set free because it was headed in a nonthreatening direction."
Trump also indicated that the attack was telegraphed in advance.
