The Palayamkottai police have arrested five persons for hacking a police constable at VOC Stadium on Sunday evening.
Police constable Mohammed Rahmathullah, 28, of Manimuthar IX Battalion had come to VOC Stadium along with his family on Sunday evening as the families would bring their children to the sports arena in the evenings, especially during the weekends. When two groups of youth got engaged in heated arguments and then started assaulting each other, Mr. Rahmathullah, who was sitting nearby with his family, asked them to move out of the stadium as the children in large number were playing there.
Agitated over this, one of them hacked him with sickle in which the police constable sustained cut injury on the right hand. After the attack, the troublemakers fled the scene.
Mr. Rahmathullah was admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Palayamkottai police launched the manhunt with the CCTV footages collected from the cameras fitted near VOC Stadium and nabbed five persons who were identified as Harish, 21, of Vasavappapuram under Murappanadu police station limits in Thoothukudi district, and Madhan, 19 and Parthiban, 30, from Ilanthaikulam in Palayamkottai and Dinesh, 20, and a 16-year-old boy from Palayamkottai Market area.
