Chem Skill Development Centre (CSDC), founded to bridge the gap between chemical industry expectations and academic programmes, has proposed to expand its training programme. It will henceforth train students from all engineering branches who wish to take up a career in the chemical industry besides graduates and postgraduates in chemistry.
CSDC is a joint initiative of Chemical Industries Association, Indian Chemical Council and Manali Industries Association, a non-profit trust. The training programme was developed by a team of chemical engineers with over 40 years of experience in the industry. So far around 1,200 students and 400 engineers have benefitted from the training programme.
Topics such as heat transfer, mass transfer and process calculations, and process technology, soft skills were not considered. The subjects were selected focussing on the specific needs of the industry and identifying those not normally taught as part of the curriculum. Topics were chosen irrespective of the career chosen by the fresh graduates. The first programme was launched in 2021 and encouraged by students’ feedback the centre has expanded its programmes to colleges. Institutions such as SRMIST, AC College of Technology and KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology have included it in their syllabus already, said an official.
