The six-day police custody of four accused in the brutal murder of an elderly couple in Sivagiri on April 28, 2025, ended on Thursday. Following this, they were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
The bodies of Ramasamy (72) and Bakkiyam (63), residents of Megaraiyan Thottam in Uchimedu near Sivagiri, were found in their home on May 1 — three days after the murder. Investigations revealed that the accused — Aachiappan, Madeswaran, and Ramesh — had stolen 10.75 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the couple, handed it over to a goldsmith, Gyanasekaran, to be melted, and later retrieved it in a different form. All four were arrested on May 19.
The police obtained custody of the accused on June 13 for interrogation. After the six-day period concluded, they were presented before the court on Thursday evening. District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate G. Pandiarajan scheduled the next hearing for June 27 and ordered that the accused be remanded to prison.
Of the four, Aachiappan, Madeswaran, and Ramesh — who were detained under the Goondas Act on June 18 — were sent to Coimbatore Central Prison, while Gyanasekaran was lodged in the district prison at Gobichettipalayam. Details of the interrogation and their alleged involvement in other murder cases are yet to be revealed.
