Worn-out People’s Liberation Army man returns to water to save last of group of 5 in trouble, says saving lives is ‘instinctive’

A Good Samaritan in China who defied his worried mother’s pleas for him to stop saving people who were drowning in a lake has won online admiration for his heroism.

Serving People’s Liberation Army soldier Zhang Wei was holidaying with his mother beside a lake in Shangqiu, central Henan province, on June 6, when he heard several people struggling in the water and yelling for help, according to the state broadcaster CCTV.

They included a quarrelling couple who had jumped into the water and three men who were trying to help them.

Without hesitation, Zhang dived into the water to save them.
