President Sergio Mattarella will attend the funeral Saturday of a Carabiniere police officer who was shot dead by a fleeing thief on his last day of duty on Thursday, sources said Friday.
Carlo Legrottaglie, 59, was killed in Francavilla Fontana, in Puglia, during a firefight with two thieves on the run, who had been discovered aboard a stolen car.
The sources were speaking in Ostuni, the Puglia town where the officer lived with his wife and two 15-year-old daughters.
The funeral will take place in the parish church of Santa Maria Madre della Chiesa in Ostuni at 11:00.
