The Prime Minister has been accused of misleading the public over his tax raid on private schools after suggesting it will be used to fund homes, not teachers.

Sir Keir Starmer provoked outrage after suggesting his housing pledge this week was made possible ‘because’ of VAT on school fees.

This would be deeply controversial as Labour have always maintained the tax would pay for state school improvements such as 6,500 new teachers.

It comes as families await a High Court judgement tomorrow over whether the tax is legal.

During a judicial review hearing earlier this year, Government lawyers said a ‘central objective’ of the policy was to ‘invest in public services, including the state education system’.
