Sir Keir Starmer today failed to rule out further tax rises to fund his U-turn on axing winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners.

The Prime Minister refused to set out in the House of Commons how Labour would stump up the estimated £1.25billion needed for his humiliating reversal.

He declined to offer an answer as Tory leader Kemi Badenoch quizzed him over how he would now balance the books during Prime Minister's Questions.

'Everyone out there's asking, 'where is the money coming from?',' Mrs Badenoch said. 'And the fact is, he doesn't know how to balance the books.'

She urged Sir Keir to 'admit' that increasing the threshold for winter fuel payments 'will be funded by putting everybody's taxes up'.
