Tensions exploded in Los Angeles over the weekend after President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops to counter protesters, who had flooded the downtown area to demonstrate against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and the Trump administration’s heavy handed mass deportation campaign.

Clashes between protesters and local and federal law enforcement took the national spotlight throughout the weekend; protesters set several automated cars ablaze and police forces were captured on video attacking demonstrators and journalists alike. Trump and his inner circle, meanwhile, were ratcheting up the vitriol from the sidelines.

“Looking really bad in L.A. BRING IN THE TROOPS!!!” Trump posted to his social media site. “ARREST THE PEOPLE IN FACE MASKS, NOW!”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he was suing the Trump administration due to what he described as an overreach of power in deploying the National Guard.

“Commandeering a state’s National Guard without consulting the Governor of that state is illegal and immoral,” Newsom, a Democrat, told MSNBC.
