Potential strikes by resident doctors over pay would be ‘futile’ and harm patients, a former chair of the Royal College of GPs has warned.
Dr Clare Gerada, who also served on the British Medical Association’s ruling council, described demands for a 29 per cent rise as unaffordable.
She made her remarks in an open letter, signed with five other senior medics, in which they accuse junior colleagues of ‘misjudging the mood in the country’.
They add: ‘There is no spare money.’
Resident doctors, previously known as junior doctors, are demanding a further inflation-busting hike despite seeing their wages jump by 22.3 per cent last year.
