The United Kingdom's recent announcement that it would suspend free trade negotiations with Israel over the Gaza war was striking both in its tone, as well as its substance. The decision resembled a rebuke typically reserved for pariah regimes, not a longstanding democratic ally. Yet here was the U.K., usually a convener of dialogue, reaching for the diplomatic equivalent of the megaphone in order to make its stance on Israel's current actions apparent. But beyond the noise, the policy impact of this move is vanishingly small, other than in the ways it may prove deeply counterproductive.
