Premier Giorgia Meloni said Thursday she was totally against halving the time needed for migrant children to obtain Italian citizenship, from 10 years to five, as advocated in an upcoming referendum.

"I am totally against halving the time for citizenship.

"The citizenship law in Italy is excellent, among other things very open.

"We have been for some time among the European nations that grant the highest number of citizenships every year.

"Speeding up the bureaucratic process once you have the right to access citizenship is a different thing: it is something that interests us and we are working on it.
