Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told families of hostages held in Gaza that Israel has accepted a new ceasefire proposal presented by Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, Israeli media has claimed.
The proposal by Witkoff would reportedly see Palestinian militant group Hamas release of ten living hostages, 60 days of truce and a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from the embattled Strip.
It would also see the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, including hundreds of those serving lengthy prison terms.
Hamas said earlier that it had received the new proposal from mediators and was studying it, but a spokesperson reportedly expressed 'disappointment' with a lack of clarity around the terms of the agreement, according to Axios.
The deal is not thought to include a clear guarantee of a permanent ceasefire, nor does it clarify whether the 60-day truce will be extended in the event that negotiators cannot agree an armistice before it expires.
