President Donald Trump on Wednesday explained why he hasn't levied more sanctions on Russia - despite being currently engaged in a war of words with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Tuesday Trump warned Putin that he was 'playing with fire,' as the Russian have escalated attacks on the Ukrainians in recent days.

During an Oval Office Q&A with reporters Wendesday, Trump was asked what was stopping him from announcing new sanctions on Russia, a move he said Sunday he 'absolutely' was considering.

'Only the fact - if I think I'm getting close to a deal I don't want to screw it up by doing that,' Trump answered.

He added, 'Let me tell you, I'm a lot tougher than the people you're talking about, but you have to know when to use that, if I think it's going to hurt a deal.'
