Country rapper and singer Shaboozey had a hard time hiding his confusion at the 2025 American Music Awards.

The ceremony, which aired on Monday, was the first production of the show since November 2022 and was broadcast live from Las Vegas, Nevada. When Shaboozey took the stage alongside country artist Megan Moroney to present the award for Favorite Country Duo or Group, a curious moment unfolded.

“Country music has been an important part of AMA history,” Shaboozey said, reading off a teleprompter.

The pair continued with a brief homage to the genre’s legacy on the AMA stage — until Moroney swerved into what some may call revisionist history.

“And this award went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music,” she said.
