Keir Starmer confirmed today that Britain is surrendering its last territory in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius under a deal that will cost taxpayers an average of £101million a year.
The Prime Minister made the announcement this afternoon after an 11th hour legal bid to halt it failed.
He insisted that the UK had little choice, because of rulings by the International Criminal Court - which are only advisory.
Sir Keir told a north London press conference there is 'no alternative but to act in Britain's national interest'.
But he revealed the deal will cost UK taxpayers £3.4billion to fund a lease on the Diego Garcia airbase, which is used by the United States.
