President Sergio Mattarella stressed the need for the EU to deliver effective policies that improve citizens' lives as he addressed the College of European Commissioners during a visit to the EU institutions in Brussels on Wednesday.
"Like many others, I am convinced that the more the EU institutions prove to be transparent and efficient, effective in providing rapid, rational responses to the needs and well-founded concerns of citizens, the more their indispensable social consensus is strengthened," Mattarella said.
The head of State got a warn reception for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"Welcome, dear President," she said.
"You are the president of one of the founding countries of our Union.
