An asylum seeker fisherman who masterminded a £12million people smuggling ring from his taxpayer-funded flat has been jailed for 25 years.

Egyptian-born Ahmed Ebid, 42, rose to become one of Britain's top trafficking kingpins, flooding Europe with 3,800 migrants.

Nicknamed 'Captain Ahmed' on Facebook, the 'cynical' smuggler ran the illegal enterprise from his cushy art-deco home in London's desirable Isleworth area.

The crook had been given the lodging back in October 2022, moving in with his wife and young daughter after claiming asylum in Britain.

But Ebid had previously been jailed for six years in Italy for attempting to smuggle a tonne of cannabis into the country, when he was given his UK home.
