A top nurse is delivering a stark warning over 'escalation' unless the government agrees a bumper pay hike.

Royal College of Nursing chief Nicola Ranger will accuse ministers of 'insulting' the profession by delaying a formal offer.

Speaking at the RCN annual congress in Liverpool, she is set to caution that the situation will come to a head this summer unless there is a 'significant' increase.

Prof Ranger's intervention comes weeks after the NHS Pay Review Body recommended a rise of about 3 per cent for nurses this year.

The government has floated a figure of 2.8 per cent for health service staff.
