Vladimir Putin's order for a three-day truce with Ukraine took effect today as Russia marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

It was not immediately clear whether either side was observing the ceasefire, which the Kremlin said would test Kyiv's readiness for peace.

It did appear relatively quiet overnight, though Ukraine's military said early today that Russian forces had launched guided air bombs in the eastern Sumy region.

Hours before the pause took effect, Moscow unleashed a barrage of drone attacks across Ukraine. Zelenskyy said earlier that a mother and child were killed in Kyiv.

Moscow unilaterally ordered its temporary truce to coincide with Victory Day celebrations in the capital, slated for Friday.
