f ever a politician earned a standing ovation on the floor of the House of Commons, it is Craig Mackinlay, the Conservative MP for South Thanet. Mr Mackinlay returned to the chamber yesterday, to a hero’s welcome, eight months after falling gravely ill with septic shock and six months after the amputation of all four limbs. Doctors had given Mr Mackinlay a 5 per cent chance of survival. His standing address to the House, on prosthetic legs, warmly welcomed by both sides of the House, is a tribute to his dedication and the skill of his carers, some of whom watched from the public gallery, receiving their own due plaudits.
