The British palette is notoriously unsophisticated and our favourite foods are arguably often bland or starchy. However, this may be changing, at least when it comes to cheese.

Tesco, the country’s biggest supermarket, reports a huge increase in demand for gourmet and specialty cheeses such as Comté, Ossau-Iraty, Morbier and Chaource. It says sales of its Finest varieties have been particularly strong, with Continental cheese the fastest-growing category.

Tesco’s most popular cheese over the past year has been Triple Crème Brie, sales of which have almost doubled. The next bestseller is Ossau-Iraty, which is up by 80 per cent, and Morbier, up by 70 per cent.

Demand for Vintage Gouda and St Félicien has risen by more than 50 per cent, while Chaource and Comté
