A retired newsagent who has spent more than 45 years in Britain has vowed to fight the Home Office after he was refused indefinite leave to remain here.

Nelson Shardey, 74, who lives in Wallasey on the Wirral and was born in Ghana, said he “cried [his] eyes out every night” after discovering he would have to wait a decade before being granted permanent residency.

Shardey, known as a “local legend” on Merseyside, told The Times that “people from all across the northwest have come out to support” his legal challenge, with more than £22,000 raised in donations.
